EVER WONDERED WHAT YOUR PHYSIO THINKS OF CROSS-FIT? BARRE FITNESS? YOGA? BAREFOOT RUNNING? INVERSION TABLES?…
WHAT TO EXPECT…
As physiotherapists, we constantly get asked the question “What’s your opinion of…” (insert the newest trend for fitness or injury management here). With over 13 years of physiotherapy practice, my answers are seldom simple. However, our life and our bodies certainly aren’t either and what works for one person may not work for the next.
Our bodies are amazing and complicated machines. They deserve great respect and care as they will ultimately determine the quality and length of our lives. In this age of information overload, it’s important to have people you trust have a solid foundation of knowledge and training from which to base their opinions on.
Physiotherapists are university-trained health professionals and possess advanced knowledge and training in diagnosis and management of musculoskeletal injuries. The advantage of discussing these topics with a physiotherapist is that you get an educated opinion on the information coming at you, and it’s what differentiates your physiotherapist’s view on (for example) your back pain, from your next door neighbour– who is a mortgage broker and tells you they had “exactly the same thing” and have the perfect answer to fix it. No disrespect to mortgage brokers! But personally, I’d take my advice on mortgages with a grain of salt—it’s not my area of training.
The answer to information overload? Becoming a discriminating consumer and knowing the skillset and area of expertise of your source. This is what you can find here: physio perspectives on questions that matter to you.
A SNEAK PEAK OF WHAT’S TO COME…
We are excited to be creating a long list of topics to ponder on our new blog!
Here are just a few of them:
- The anatomy of a deadlift-why this exercise is one of THE most common exercises we hear people report they hurt their back doing.
- What’s the difference between chiropractors and physios?
- Is IMS(dry needling) the same as acupuncture? What is the difference?
- What’s are the best exercises to do to make sure I don’t get injured while training for a marathon?
- Is sitting really the new smoking? Are standing desks the answer?
- And, as promised, physiotherapy opinions on the latest fitness trends—and expect us to have tried them…this could get interesting!
